When Calls The Heart
When Calls The Heart
Flipping through the
channels you stumble upon the hallmark channel iconic for corny movies and
shows involving two helplessly in love people torn apart by obstacles and
other factors. But one that comes to mind is a show calls When Called the Heart.
This show, very cheesy came to my attention as soon as we found out how Strange
the show was. The bases of the plot are set in the west were a school teacher
helps a mining town and falls in love with the Mountie stationed there. What’s
interesting to me about this show exactly is it complete disinterest of
historical details. The show is fictional as it states but it's doesn't seem makes
sense. The show is based in 1910s at the heart of an industrial revolution with
electricity, water and other commodities coming to richer homes. In this small
town we start off with a huge mine explosion and the loss of many of the
husbands and sons, as Ms. Thatcher comes, she isn't used to this country life. But
throughout the show we see things improving everyone happy and dancing around
in fields. When this wasn't the case, these newly developed towns were often
full of diseases from uncleanliness overworked miners and full saloons. But
everyone seems healthy the workers seem happy doing their job with no soot
which is unusual seeing as their all miners and the saloon is always empty.
This may be my interpretation of a stereotypical western town but I did expect
some aspects of this to be seen in the show. This is also seen in their
costumes; modern jackets dresses are scattered in and out and while they do
have some period dress sometimes, I question whether they know what people wore
back then. A few more things I noticed focusing on specifics first off Ms.
Thatcher had come from a wealthy family in the city back then marriages were
arranged and often unbroken but she was given the change to run away to become
a teacher and fall in love with a Mountie, it’s evident that her parents
dislike them but they do little about it, the status your daughter marries into
could define a family so in my opinion they should have been more meticulous if
they did intend to marry her off. Or the fact that a lady wins for mayor, it's very unlikely to happen seeing woman weren’t even able to vote till the
1920s that one should rise to political power. I’m not trying to say the show
is a complete ruin it has some aspects of a good show but the show needs more
accuracy and less helpless romance.
I find it interesting from watching the show, and reading your description that once the teacher arrived she immediately fell in love. Although she is also a teacher, from seeing the show I know that her main purpose is to be interested in the Mountie. I wonder what implicit message the producers were trying to convey. In addition I found it interesting how white washed the cast was, considering how lacking they were with being historically correct in other respects.
