Jaws:more harm than good
When the 1975 blockbuster came out reviews were mixed
some said it was too busy other said it was a cultures phenomenon but even
still jaws has made a total of 500 million in ticket sales. But how did this
affect sharks. The movie displayed an aggressive shark killing off beach
bystanders because they enjoyed it. It didn’t help the public's already low
perceptions of sharks. The shark in them movie was a great white, this creature
is undeniably dangerous with 100s of teeth, an acute sense of smell, and almost
20 feet long and is responsible for the most unprovoked shark attacks. The
problem is that jaws not only affected great whites but all shark populations.
Almost 50 million sharks a year are killed and people disregard that only 3 and
dangerous to people. It also caused beaches attendance to take an all-time low
around 1975. But the movie wasn’t all made it rescued he film industry, and
made over 260 million. This also started the idea that sharks should be studied
before people knew little about them but this raised some awareness for them.
But still we can’t help thinking all sharks are man-eating machines who will pick
you out and eat you. But we can’t stop fearing them shark attacks have risen
due to global warming and them glowing closer to shores. So, unless global
warming is going to start, we’ll have more and more shark attacks as they lose
their food and grow closer to shore. But jaws, didn’t help sharks the movie demonetized
all shark even not deadly species, but how is someone who has no further
knowledge about sharks supposed to tell between a killer and a bottom feeder.
They all look similar in the public’s eyes. So this is a lesson to before you
put something out there check how it can effects species cultures because it
could be an amazing movie but It might always hurt creatures that haven’t done much
to us to justify our behavior. As shark populations are being hunted to extinction we should consider what were putting out there before we do.
I never knew all of the information relating to Jaws. I didn’t think about how a movie could affect the population’s perception of sharks or attending beaches in general. I definitely think that it has become a part of our culture to want to feel afraid or use movies to give us some type of rush. However the effects you have listed are certainly a concern and should be addressed. There are still many movies involving killer sharks and such that I think could potentially give the wrong idea. I think it is interesting how much a movie can affect our population.
ReplyDeleteI love the ocean, and when I moved to Sacramento a few years ago, being so far from the ocean was a major downside. I used to live in Salinas, right outside of Monterey, I could see the ocean from my school. I know that most sharks are not dangerous, in fact, you are more likely to be killed by a vending machine than a shark, but I still refuse to watch these types of movies because I know they will make me more scared of the ocean and surfing, something I love. The way media, as in Hollywood, portrays sharks completely shapes the way the public views them, and sharks are not the only thing being wrongly portrayed. Since our society is so geared around media, and the movie industry is built to make money, movies and TV shows can completely change the public's view of something, even if it is incorrectly portrayed.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fascinating topic that really hits home for me. You see after watching Jaws I developed a great fear of sharks and saw the only solution as murder. I go out every day and poach at least 5 sharks. Then I send them to shark jail and they stay there for eternity.
ReplyDeleteWell depending on where you poached these alleged shark this could be illegal as shark l finning is outlawed in about 30 countries so unless you fished in international waters it is most likely that you have done something illegal if so I encourage you to meet the shark’s family and tell them that you have done nothing wrong and you do not regret your actions.
DeleteThat is a tantalizing idea and I will do exactly that. The list of sharks I have killed so far include: Bob, Barry, Barbara, Betsy, Blooberson, Bark, Crandon, Cooper, Carter, Caroline, Camilla, Crampy, Decker, Duplex, Dina, Dinah, Dilila, Eric, Erica, Ersula, Emerald, Exico, and finally Filidelphia. I will find there families and express my concern.
DeleteI must let you know though in killing these sharks you not only killed all the shark queens children’s you’ve killed the shark queen herself filidelphia which means you have hunted a population to extinction so I implore you to look at your actions and seek forgiveness from the shark king who wishes you to suffer for your wrongdoings.
