Product Placement

Placement
Product placement or
another name for it is Madison and vines is when manufacturers of goods gain
exposure for their products by paying for them to be featured in movies and
television. It can be seen in almost any show or movie. It’s in everything we
watch were losing television just to become longer adds. When I was younger, I
always remembered a very distinct use of product placement it was in one of my
first movies Oliver and company. It wasn’t a very well none movie but it was
one of the few cassettes tapes my grandmother had. In the middle of a singing
number I realized all the billboards were filled with different add companies
at first, I thought it was cool because look it was a company, I was familiar
with in a movie I liked. It was confusing to me how they did that I thought the
movie had just chosen to include these certain companies.
The product placement is effectually
used when the audience either think highly of the product or notices it in a
way that makes them remember it. But no matter if they did have the blaring coca
cola logo there wasn’t a single mention of it. Just a few appearances of the
logo. Which makes me think they didn’t do very well in appearing to the general
public with the product. Because if someone doesn’t even know what coca cola is
how are they going to be able to connect the logo. It barely makes an
appearance. So, I think they didn’t have a very well throughout strategy,
seeing that I remember the logo not the product. But maybe this is a good idea
it’s using repetition know the logo and maybe not the product? Whether they got
people’s attention or not all I can remember is the blaring red logo in the
middle of a song.
But from the consumer’s
point of view I enjoyed it better that it was so little mentioned and it wasn’t
in your face it was in fit in well seeing as it was set in New York. I don’t
think this product placement was all that much effective but I enjoyed their
sly use of the add as it fit in well.
I find it interesting that you said that the use of product placement wasn't effective in Oliver & Company because all you remembered was the logo, and not the product. I however, disagree with you, and I think that the fact that you remember that logo so many years after actually watching the movie makes it very effective. Now, you have that memory of the logo, and that nostalgic, emotional connection to the company. Sure, a small child probably isn't going to recognize a product from the movie to then go out and buy it, but I don't think that the child is the target audience in this situation. Maybe the company is trying to appeal to the parents, the people who are more likely to actually drink Coca Cola, and those who are more likely to notice the background while watching a movie with their kids.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Grace because although you don't remember the product, every time you see their logo you will have that connection to the movie. For me at least, I would have the feeling that the company was familiar so it must have something I should buy. At the same time it could have the opposite effect if someone does not like the movie or show that the product placement occurred. This could have a negative lasting impression on on the people who did not enjoy what they were watching.
